Waltham, Mass. (04/28/16) - In honor of the 2016 graduating seniors, the Lasell powered to a 15-6 win over Eastern Nazarene at Stein Diamond on the campus of Brandeis University. The Lasers improve to 17-14, while the Lions fall to 15-21 on the season.
Prior to tonight's contest, Lasell College honored seniors Skylar Beckerman (Pensacola, Fla.), Dan Gagnon (Pomfret, Conn.), Wes Hurty (Windsor, Conn.), Gary Trottier (Rehoboth, Mass.), Tyler Flaherty (Portland, Maine), Frank Zammarelli (Burrillville, R.I. and Jake Malone (Harwich, Mass.) for their outstanding contributions and dedication to the Lasell baseball program. These seven seniors will be missed on and off the field, and we look forward to their future success.
Appropriately enough, the Lasell seniors had quite a night from the plate. Gagnon earned three hits on the night, which puts him one away from 100 career hits. Hurty ripped two hits on the night including a three run homer to begin the game, while Beckerman (Pensacola Fla.) went 2-for-2 and scored twice for the Lasers.
For the Lions, freshman Andrew Santora (Middle Village, N.Y.) smashed two doubles and drove in two runners, while fellow freshman Josue Basilis (Bronx, N.Y.) reached base three times on the night and crossed the plate once in the effort.
The Lasers got their bats going fast in the bottom of the first when Hurty smashed a line drive three-run shot to left field. In the second, the Lasers batted around and sent six runners home to take an early 9-0 lead over the Lions. Junior Hector Coscione (Newton, Mass.) sparked a rally with a triple to right center, which led to three more runners coming home for the Lasers to take a 12-0 lead after three innings.
In the fifth inning, the Lions mounted a comeback with a two-out rally that sent three runners home. Basilis singled to begin back-to-back two-out rallies for the Lions to pull within six runs of the Lasers. Fortunately for Lasell, sophomore Thomas Pietruczuk (Norwich, Conn.) and freshman Justin Webb (San Diego, Calif.) came in and closed the door on the Lions in the seventh and eighth. The Lasers added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to 15-6.
Senior starting pitcher Gary Trottier (Rehoboth, Mass.) allowed one hit and no runs over 3 1/3 innings while whiffing four batters, while junior Brandon Wynne (New Haven, Conn.) allowed nine runs (seven earned) on seven hits over 1 2/3 innings. The Lasers bullpen got quite a bit of work tonight allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings.
The Lasers return to non-conference action tomorrow, April 29th at 7:00 pm at Stein Diamond against Framingham State University.
